Module Overview & Features

The TP4056 is a complete constant-current/constant-voltage (CC/CV) linear charger module designed for single-cell 3.7V lithium-ion and lithium-polymer (LiPo / 18650) batteries. Modern iterations of this module come equipped with a USB Type-C port for broad compatibility, alongside the DW01A battery protection IC and dual MOSFET (FS8205A) switches.

This protection circuitry prevents catastrophic conditions like battery over-charging, over-discharging (below 2.4V), and short-circuit over-current spikes, making it an essential building block for battery-powered Arduino, ESP32, and IoT projects.

Technical Specifications

Parameter Specification
Input Voltage Range 4.5V – 5.5V DC (via Type-C or IN+ / IN- solder pads)
Full Charge Voltage 4.2V ± 1%
Max Charging Current 1000 mA (configurable via Rprog resistor)
Over-discharge Cutoff 2.5V (handled by DW01A)
Over-current Protection 3.0A
Status LEDs Red: Charging in progress | Blue / Green: Full Charge
Operating Temperature -10°C to +85°C

Pinout & Wiring Diagram

Always connect your battery and load according to the dedicated solder pads. Never connect the load directly across B+ and B-, as that bypasses the DW01A protection IC.

Pad Name Function Where to Connect
IN+ 5V DC Positive Input External 5V Solar Panel or DC Power Source
IN- Power Input Ground External Ground (0V)
B+ Battery Positive 18650 or LiPo Battery Positive (+) Terminal
B- Battery Negative 18650 or LiPo Battery Negative (-) Terminal
OUT+ Protected Load Positive Output Microcontroller / Step-up Booster VIN (+)
OUT- Protected Load Ground Output Microcontroller / Step-up Booster GND (-)

Configuring Charging Current (Rprog)

By default, the board includes a 1.2kΩ (marked 122) SMD resistor at pin 2 (PROG), which sets the charging current to 1000mA (1A). If you are charging smaller capacity LiPo batteries (e.g. 500mAh or 250mAh), you should desolder this resistor and replace it with a higher resistance to prevent overheating:

  • 1.2 kΩ: 1000 mA (Default for 18650 cells > 1200mAh)
  • 2.0 kΩ: 580 mA
  • 3.0 kΩ: 400 mA
  • 5.0 kΩ: 250 mA
  • 10 kΩ: 130 mA

3D Printing & Enclosure Recommendations

The interactive 3D model above features our snap-fit mount box tailored specifically for the TP4056 board with Type-C connector:

  • Slicer Settings: 0.20mm layer height, 20% infill (Grid or Gyroid).
  • Material: PETG or ABS recommended if charging continuously at 1A, as the linear regulator chip dissipates heat. For casual use, PLA is suitable.
  • Type-C Port Cutout: Designed with a 1.2mm perimeter bevel to accommodate standard USB-C cable heads without binding.
  • LED Visibility: The top lid features two 2mm light-pipe channels allowing you to clearly see the red (charging) and blue (standby/charged) status indicators.

Important Safety Tips

  • Always double check battery polarity before soldering to B+ and B-. Reverse polarity will destroy the TP4056 IC instantly.
  • When charging, the module IC can reach 60°C – 70°C. Ensure your 3D enclosure has adequate ventilation slits.
